Metric System

Canada uses metric measurements along our highways. 1 kilometer is approximately 6/10 of a mile (1.61 km. = 1 mi.). Our volume measurements are also metric, with 1 litre being equal to approximately .26 US gallons (1 us gal. = 3.75 litres) (HINT: just multiply the number of kilometers by .6 to get the approximate number of miles and multiply the number of litres by 4 to get the approximate equivalent in us gallons).

Gas Prices En Route

Considering the exchange on US dollars, our gas prices are slightly more expensive. If you are crossing the border, it is less expensive to fill up on the US side. Prices in the north are generally from about $0.65 Cdn. to $0.90 Cdn. per litre in the small northern towns. ( $1.53 US to $2.12 US per US gallon).

Duty Free Stores

Visit the duty free stores at the border crossings and airports. Some real good bargains can be found there! Liquor and beer can be purchased duty free, as well as cigarettes and cigars.

Rules of the Road

The police (OPP - Ontario Provincial Police) are very diligent in speed enforcement. Please note that our speed limit is 90 km per hour (55 mph) on main highways (#11 and #17) and 80 km per hour (50 mph) on secondary highways (#584 to Nakina & #631 from White River). They sometimes allow excess speed up to 10 km per hour over the limit if traffic is light. You must wear a seat belt at all times; right turns on red light are allowed; open alcohol is absolutely prohibited; and watch for moose, especially at night.
